Researcher, Cataloger, & Translator

Mehari Worku has worked on PEMM in the position of Researcher, Cataloger, and Translator since September 2020. He has cataloged over 4,630 stories in over 30 manuscripts, and translated over 200 stories. He also translated over 150 of its stories from Geʿez into English.

Mehari Worku is completing his doctorate in the study of the Christian Near East in the Department of Semitic and Egyptian Languages and Literatures at The Catholic University of America in Fall 2023.

An Ethiopian raised in the EOTC and schooled in its traditional system of education, he is an expert on Geʿez language and literature. At Addis Ababa University, he received a BA in Ethiopian Languages and Literature and a master’s in African Languages and Applied Linguistics. He went on to teach in the AAU Department of Ethiopian Languages and Literature for eight years, until 2015.

He has published his research on Ethiopian language politics, the Amharic philosophy of culture, Christian theology, and the Taʾammera Maryam (Miracles of Mary). The title of his dissertation is ‘The Fifteenth-Century Ethiopian Orthodox Ecclesiology of Giyorgis of Sagla’s መጽሐፈ፡ ምሥጢር (Mäṣhafä Məsṭir, The Book of Mystery).’

He holds a position as Visiting Assistant Professor of Church History and Ethiopic Christianity at Agora University.

His research is posted on Academia. He and Henok Elias created a tribute to Getatchew Haile.
