To catalog a story in a Täˀammərä Maryam manuscript, identify the story's incipit (this is the first unique sentence in the story; not the uniform blessings that open every story) and type the Geʿez (classical Ethiopic) characters into the search bar (you must use the Search button to retrieve results, not the Enter key) . Then, use the results to identify the story in the PEMM database that matches the story in your manuscript. You can search all 20,000+ incipits in the PEMM database (select Match All Incipits) or you can search only 1,000 incipits, the single most representative incipit for each story (select Match Canonical Incipits Only). Interpreting the results takes skill. Go to the end of the Using this Site page to find more extensive instructions.
The Princeton Ethiopian, Eritrean, and Egyptian Miracles of Mary (PEMM) project is a comprehensive resource for the 1,000+ miracle stories written about and the 2,500+ images painted of the Virgin Mary in these African countries, and preserved in Geʿez between 1300 and the present.
